Women: An Olympic distance competition
(1.5km swim, 40km cycle, 10km
run)
ATHLETE / NOC QUOTA
Athlete quota: 50 men
50 women
Total of 100 athletes
Maximum per NOC: A maximum of 9 NOCs
may have a maximum of 3 athletes per event.
All other NOCs may have a maximum of 2
athletes per event.
QUALIFICATION SYSTEM
Attribution of qualification places
NOCs will be attributed qualification places,
as per the detailed selection criteria noted
below, and will select from eligible athletes to
fill these places. Athletes may not qualify their
NOC more than 1 qualification place.
QUALIFICATION SYSTEM IN DETAIL
a) Regional Olympic Qualifying Events: 5
places
Olympic places 1 to 5 will be allocated to
the NOC of the winner of each of the 5
regional Olympic Qualifying events, for a
total of 5 men and 5 women.
The regional Olympic Qualifying events
may take place any time between 1
August 2003 and the date of the 2004
Triathlon World Championships
(scheduled for 7 May 2004).
b) 2004 Triathlon World Championships:
3 places
Olympic places 6 to 8 (3 women and 3
men) will be allocated to the NOC of the
top 3 finishers from the 2004 Triathlon
World Championships. The athletes
achieving these positions also gain
eligibility for selection If any of the top 3
finishers has already earned a place at
the regional Qualifier, or the NOC of the
OLYMPIC
QUALIFICATION
The Olympic Qualification
has been approved and is
as follows for the 2004
Olympic Games in
Athens, Greece.

the next highest finishing athlete in the
2004 World Championships earns the
eligibility and their NOC a qualification
place. This will continue until 3 places for
men and 3 for women have been
allocated, providing the athletes are
within the 5% for men and 8% for women
quality control cut-off time
c) ITU Triathlon World Ranking: 39
places
Olympic places 9 to 47 will be allocated to
the NOCs in order of the highest ranked
athletes on the ITU World Rankings, at
the date of 2004 Triathlon World
Championships, who have not previously
qualified their NOC a place.
d) Host nation: 1 place
Olympic place 48 (1 woman and 1 man)
will be awarded to the host nation. If
Greece achieves qualification through
ITU competitions, place 48 will return to
the ITU World Rankings. The minimum
eligibility criteria also applies to the places
allocated to the host nation
e) Tripartite Commission (IOC-ANOC-ITU)
Invitation places: 2 places
Olympic places 49 to 50 (for a total of 2
men and 2 women) will be allocated to
Tripartite Commission Invitation places.
NOCs shall apply for Tripartite
Commission Invitation places by 30 June
2002. The Tripartite Commission will
identify a priority list of Invitation
applications by 31 August 2002 and will
confirm the allocation of Invitation places
by 14 May 2004
The minimum eligibility criteria also
applies to Invitation places
Maximum number of athletes per NOC
No more than 9 NOCs for men and 9 NOCs
for women can earn 3 places. All other NOCs
may have a maximum of 2 athletes each.
Minimum eligibility criteria
Athletes eligible for selection for the Olympic
Games shall be only those adequately
prepared for high level international
competition and fill qualification positions
gained by their NOC. Athlete eligibility will
be gained by achieving a top 125 ITU
Triathlon World Ranking (as of the 2004
Triathlon World Championships scheduled for
7 May 2004) or by winning a place for their
NOC at the 2004 Triathlon World
Championships.
