Expo and registration star in Triathlon World Championships

Cancun, Mexico.- Cancun's Convention Center opened up their doors today as the expo and registration for the ITU Triathlon World Championship, to be held this weekend in this Mexican resort.

Many athletes started to receive their number and other race items, after they registered on line through their respective national federation.

Nearly 1.600 competitors from 40 countries will arrive this week for the Worlds. Age-groupers will race on Saturday while elite men and women will contest the following day.

Australia, Canada, United States and the host country will send the larger teams.

The expo also started today, featuring some of the companies and entities related to the event and Cancun's tourist development, as well as the organizers of the upcoming Triathlon World Championships in Queenstown, New Zealand (2003) and Funchal, Portugal (2004).

Asdeporte, the Cancun World organizers, are promoting the Maadmad Ironman-distance triathlon, scheduled for October 11, 2003.

Others are showing their products and specials, such as the Cancun tourist bureau, SportCity, tiendas Marti, Enerplex, Senor Frog's, among others.

The Convention Center also hosts the press and information centers and will be open during this week for other related events, such as the International Triathlon Union (ITU) Congress.

Mexico's mejor tourist destination saw dozens of athletes cycling in the Hotel Zone, while others swam in the pool and in open water.

Cancun will host the Tri Worlds for the second time, following a successful 1995 edition.
