Japan Triathlon Union announced Six* Paratriathletes representing Team Japan for Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games

* On August 5, Athlete Atsuko Maruo was given the redistribution slot by the IPC to compete in Women’s Individual PTVI and the number of Japanese triathletes representing Team Japan increased to seven.

Following the Executive Board meeting held on July 8, the Japan Triathlon Union (JTU) announced that the following 7 athletes were approved by the Executive Board as the contenders who will represent Triathlon Team Japan for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games:

“On behalf of the members of the Selection Committee, I would like to thank the Executive Board for endorsing our recommendation on the paratriathletes who will represent Japan this summer at the Paralympic Games. As National Federation governing both triathlon and paratriathlon, we are proud to have selected and recommended these athletes through a fair and impartial evaluation process in line with the qualification criteria. We are committed to doing our utmost in helping them prepare for the upcoming Games, and would deeply appreciate continued support extended by the people of the region where the athletes are based,” said Shin Otsuka, Senior Executive Director of JTU.

Masamitsu Tomikawa, Leader of JTU Paralympic Project Team: “Despite the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games being postponed by a year, all the elite paratriathletes including those who are not in the final list fought hard until the end of the qualification period. It is a pity that not all of our athletes were able to earn his/her spot. We as a team will make good preparations for the Games to be held next month, so as to compete against world’s top paratriathletes and demonstrate the culmination of all our athletes’ hard work.”

The Paralympic triathlon events are scheduled to take place in Tokyo’s Odaiba Marine Park on the following dates:
