10歳の時に網膜はく離を発症、以来悪化しないよう激しい運動を避けて生活するが、20歳頃電車で出会った方に紹介されてランニングを開始。走り始めて5年後の25歳でほぼ完全に視力を失い、ブラインドマラソン競技に本格的に挑戦。
その後2013年にクロストレーニングとして取り組んでいたトライアスロンに挑戦し、5月世界トライアスロンシリーズ横浜大会でレースデビュー。2015年4月に三井住友海上へ入社。東京都東村山市を拠点に、得意のランニングを武器に世界と戦う。
エリートで実績を残していた同じ所属先の椿浩平選手を2019年からガイドに迎え、二人三脚でさらなる強化を進め、念願のパラリンピック初出場を果たす。東京大会では、PTVIクラス日本史上初となる銅メダルを獲得した。その後、ランニングに専念するため約1年間パラトライアスロンから離れるものの、2022年ワールドトライアスロンパラ選手権でレース復帰。2023年8月からは、ロングディスタンスで活躍する寺澤光介選手をガイドとして迎え、世界を転戦し、パリ2024パラリンピックにバイパルタイト枠で選出される。パリ大会では、11位でフィニッシュした。
Biography:
Satoru Yoneoka suffered retinal detachment at the age of ten, and since then he avoided intense physical exercise in order not to worsen the condition. When he was around twenty, he was introduced to running by a person he happened to meet on a train. At 25, five years after he started running, he became entirely blind, and began his challenge in blind marathon on a full scale. Later, in 2013, he tried out triathlon which he was using as cross training and made a race debut at World Triathlon Series Yokohama event in May. In April 2015, he joined Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Company. He is based in Higashimurayama City in Tokyo and is competing internationally, taking advantage of his strength in the run part.
Yoneoka welcomed former elite athlete and fellow team member Kohei Tsubaki as his guide in 2019, and the duo worked together to further strengthen their skills, leading to his long-awaited debut at the Paralympic Games in his home country. At Tokyo 2020, he won the first bronze medal in Japan’s history in the PTVI class. He then took a break from paratriathlon for about a year to concentrate on running but returned to racing at the 2022 World Triathlon Para Championships. Starting in August 2023, he competed in international competitions with long-distance triathlete Kosuke Terasawa as his guide and was selected for the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games under the bipartite quota. At Paris 2024, he finished in 11th place.
